Work
Experience:
Since
January of 2003, I have been working on several contract-based projects
for companies including iTraffic, VirginTravelStore and The Grand
Union. Having produced several animated Flash pieces to be used
in DHTML overlays for iTraffic, as well as a Flash piece also for
use in DHTML overlay for VirginTravelStore, I have been involved
between February and April of 2003 in a large Illustration and Animation
- based internet project for The Grand Union, centred around the
creation of a specific look and feel for a new soft drink product
that has recently been launched. In June I completed work for WCRS
on several online BMW media elements.
Further
to this, IÕve worked in London with the BloodPartnership since August
of 2000 as a designer, animator and illustrator in the field of
Online Advertising. Between April and August of 2000, I worked as
a designer and illustrator for Brainwashers Ltd. in online media.
Between July of 1999 and April of 2000, I worked on a contractual
brief involving illustration for an autobiography by Mr. Rick Andrews,
a senior lecturer at the Technikon Natal in Durban, South Africa.
Prior to this I had been working as a digital illustrator and visual
designer for Barrows Point of Purchase in Durban, South Africa.
A period of overlap occurred between my work for Barrows and that
of the Technikon Natal, where I lectured between 1995 and 1996 in
the Art of Life Studies. I left my work as a lecturer to join Barrows
full-time in 1997.
IÕve
handled briefs for clients including Freeserve, Telewest Blueyonder,
AskJeeves, Brassmonkeys, Farm Creative Agency, Smile, Iceland Organic,
Microsoft, Cadbury, Virgin.net, Berocca and BMW.
Having
completed a five-year Higher Diploma in Visual Design at the Technikon
Natal in Southern Africa, I have since spent five years working
in several fields pertaining to Visual Design and Illustration.
Beginning
work in a specialised Point-of-Purchase Studio in Durban, South
Africa, I handled all in-house digital illustration, as well as
setup for print production on those briefs I was responsible for.
Thereafter I spent some time working on several projects involving
manually illustrated work, before moving abroad to London. At this
stage I began introducing my illustrative work into the online media
I was producing. I have for the past two years been responsible
for the production and output of Online Advertising Media for the
BloodPartnership. IÕve been responsible for the generation from
start to finish of several pieces of viral marketing and advertising,
and have also been involved in the production of online campaign
elements.

Profile:
In 1997
I was hired as an illustrator on digital media by a POP(Point-of-Purchase)
company in Durban, South Africa. Here I was responsible for the
production of digital artwork which could be translated into print
for use on both permanent (metal) and temporary (corrugated) point-of-purchase
displays. After spending a brief period utilising traditional illustration
for a contractual brief I came to London and joined Brainwashers
Ltd., an online design studio. During this time, I gained experience
in Macromedia Flash, and began incorporating my illustrative skills
into the online media I was working with at the time. In August
2000, I joined with BloodPartnership Ltd., where I was able (due
to the more creative nature of the work) to put these skills to
greater use. I have decided to forego the technical aspects of online
development in favour of building a portfolio of work which reflects
a more creative use of design and animation.
Work
Experience Summary:
November
2002 - July 2003:
Freelance
Design and Animation / illustration
I have
been freelancing during this period primarily as a Flash animator,
producing several Flash banners including a Freeserve Flash overlay
campaign for a London-based company called iTraffic, as well as
having produced a Flash overlay for Virgin Travelstore. I've completed
work for The Grand Union involving the illustration and design of
all elements for the launch of Freekee Soda, a new soft drink aimed
at the youth market. I've also worked on several online media elements
for WCRS involving BMW banners and superstitials.
August
2000 - November 2002:
BloodPartnership
Ltd. London (www.bloodpartnership.com)
BloodPartnership
was an Advertising Agency which focused on online and interactive
communication. As Visual designer and Illustrator, I was responsible
for handling the creative execution of work ranging from online
campaigns to the production of animated online viral movies as well
as work on several microsites. During this period I made use of
Flash 4.0 and 5.0, ImageReady 3.0, Photoshop 6.0 and Freehand 9.0
in order to produce both static and animated work including viral
animations, banner, pop-up and Overlay campaigns.
April
2000 - August 2000:
Brainwashers
Ltd. London (www.brainwashers.co.uk - now www.fhlame.com)
While
working with Brainwashers, I used the opportunity to improve my
knowledge of the software used to output online media, and also
to begin incorporating my illustrative work into online briefs.
I worked primarily with Flash 4.0 and Freehand 9.0 during this period
as well as utilising ImageReady 3.0 for the output of several banner-based
projects.
July
1999 - April 2000:
Technikon
Natal, Durban, South Africa (www.ntech.ac.za / www.gdtek.co.za)
During
this period, I took time to work with a former senior lecturer of
mine in order to produce a series of eight illustrations including
a cover for an autobiographical book based on his time spent serving
in the South African Defence Force during his youth. The illustrations
were rendered in acrylic and watercolour.
April
1997 - July 1999:
Barrows
Point of Purchase, Durban, South Africa (www.barrowsonline.com)
I joined
Barrows in 1997 as an illustrator who would be able to undertake
projects which required original artwork output. During my two and
a quarter years there, I gained sound software / hardware experience
using both Macintosh and PC machines. I was also able to form a
concrete style of pen-and-ink illustration, which I could marry
successfully to digital colour, and which became the basis for much
of my commercial work with BloodPartnership.
January
1995 - December 1997:
Technikon
Natal, Durban, South Africa (www.ntech.ac.za / www.gdtek.co.za)
While
completing a Higher Diploma in Graphic Design at the Technikon Natal,
I was asked to lecture on the subject of Life Drawing to students
at the TechnikonÕs Foundational Course. The course was designed
to give students a good idea of what they could expect in terms
of content and areas of study should they choose to enrol for either
Graphic Design or Fine Arts Diploma and Degree courses. My work
involved tutoring the students in the ability to draw from life,
as well as a preliminary study of the human form and musculature.
In April of 1997 I was employed full-time by Barrow s Point of Purchase,
who agreed that I would be able to finish the year lecturing at
the Technikon.
